Saayoni arrest: CPM, Congress condemn ‘abuse of power’

Kolkata: Both CPM and Congress have spoken out against the arrest of Trinamool Youth Congress president Saayoni Ghosh, but the TMC has chosen not to read much into it.
After the CPM’s Tripura state secretariat issued a statement to condemn Saayoni’s arrest, Congress leader Anand Sharma on Monday tweeted: “Condemning the arrest of Saayoni Ghosh and the police repression let loose on political opponents and Trinamool leaders in Tripura. Abuse of power and misuse of laws to silence opposition is unacceptable in democracy.”
Trinamool national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee said: “We welcome these statements. But, we would have been happier if they had taken the fight against the BJP to the streets, where it matters, and reached out to people. We (Trinamool) came to Tripura just three months ago and the BJP is rattled.”
