Kolkata: Runaway couple end lives two days after renting house
KOLKATA: A runaway couple, with just a few thousand rupees in hand, who had rented a house in Behala, apparently killed themselves two days after moving into
Cops have launched a detailed probe to find out what led to the suicide pact. The house owner has told police that the couple were upset that their marriage wasn’t accepted by their families.
The identity of Raju Mondal, a 29-year-old, has been established and his father Noor Hossain Mondal has been asked to assist the probe. They are from Joka, police said. The identity of the 20-year-old girl has been mentioned as Rinki Mondal in one
The incident was reported from the Becharam Chatterjee Road near Behala Chowrasta around 12 noon. Ratan Chakraborty, the 75-year-old, who owns the house where the incident took place, told police that the couple had moved in barely 48 hours ago. “Chakraborty told us that Rinki was upset that their marriage had not been accepted back home. However, the couple did not leave behind any suicide note indicating the reasons for their death,” said police.
“On Tuesday noon, Parnasree police went to the spot, when Chakraborty told them that the couple had not come out despite repeated knocks by their maid who had brought them breakfast. When the couple did not come out, the landlord and others peeped in through a small crack in the window and found both hanging. Their neighbours then broke open the gate, which was locked from inside and found that the couple were hanging from the roof with sarees and informed local police,” said police.
Local cops shifted them to Vidyasagar Hospital, where they were declared brought dead. “No suicide note could be found. Arrangements are being made for post mortem to ascertain the actual cause of death. No complaint has been received till now from any end. Inquest proceedings have been initiated,” said DCP (Behala) Nilanjan Biswas.
“We are also not aware of the couple’s financial condition. But, they had paid Rs 1,000 to the flat owner and promised him another Rs 7,000. Raju had claimed that he worked for a private firm. They had literally fled from their residences and were not financially in a position to set up a new home. Even as the neighbours identified them as a couple, their relatives have told us that they were not aware that the duo got married. We need to establish what transpired in the past 48 hours, though neighbours heard arguments from the house on Monday evening. Their mobiles are being studied too,” said police.
