KOLKATA: A ruckus broke out at Writers' Buildings after a woman allegedly tried to enter home secretary Ardhendu Sen's office on Tuesday afternoon.
The police dragged the woman — who was cradling her child — through the corridor in the protected area of the building. This is a high-security area, since the offices of chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, chief secretary Asok Mohan Chakrabarti and many senior ministers are on this corridor.
Asked about the incident, chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said he would look into the matter.
The home secretary wouldn't comment on the incident.
The woman claimed she had gone to Writers' Buildings to meet Sen. She has a complaint against her in-laws who have allegedly thrown out her husband and her from their house in Nadia. For most part of the day, she was seen loitering in the corridor.
She had been going to Writers' Buildings for the past few weeks with the complaint. Around 3 pm on Tuesday, she entered the room in front of Sen's office and spoke to some officials working there. TOI was witness to the conversation between the woman and the officials.
The officials had been helping her for the past few weeks with her complaint, and had been arranging a meeting with the district magistrate of Nadia over phone, and spoke to her very politely.
But suddenly the woman lost her cool and became furious when the official asked the person over phone to look into her case. The officials are flummoxed at what suddenly overcame her and whether it was a deliberate attempt to draw attention. They called the police on duty and she was taken out of the room. Women police officers took her away when she refused to budge. She was extremely agitated and kept shouting. She even demanded that she be allowed to go into the home secretary's office.
Thousands of complaints pour in to the home secretary's office every day, and it is not possible for him to personally attend every single case, pointed out an officer. The officials in his room were extremely polite and were actually trying to help the woman, he said.
Since the officials got in touch with the office of the Nadia DM, and got her an appointment for Wednesday morning, there should not have been room for complaint, they said.
