KOLKATA: Probing into the fake call centre racket that led to seizure of Rs 4 crore in cash from rented flats in a New Town residential complex, cops are verifying two angles — whether the fraudsters were trying to park the money by investing in property or were about to pass on the money to a terror or criminal outfit.

“In the past, these criminals bought resorts and hotels. We are checking if they had stashed such a large amount for the same. We are also checking if they have links to terror outfits or a larger criminal network since we have also seized a gun during raids,” said an officer.

The kingpins — Gaurav Soni and his brother Saurabh from Liluah — who had been arrested received bail from a Barasat court, and are now absconding.

“A large number of flats in New Town are rented to outsiders. We ask the landlords to collect and submit tenants’ data to cops. I guess we all need to be more attentive about our surroundings and alert cops about any suspicious activity,” said Samaresh Das of NTFN, a New Town-based social welfare organisation.
