HOWRAH: A beautification project is now underway around Nabanna to help project Bengal in a positive light to global and national dignitaries as well as business leaders visiting Nabanna besides improving the working ambience for the chief minister, her ministers and bureaucrats.
Beautifying Nabanna’s surroundings will involve building three parks with flower gardens, landscaping and statues of historic figures.

Besides, a nearby pond will get a new look with an ice structure on its banks and a sound and light system with colours changing to the tune of Rabindra sangeet.
Undertaken by Howrah Municipal Corporation (HMC), the three parks will come up within 100 metres of the secretariat. The pond too is located within that distance of Nabanna.
Two of the parks are located on the side of Kona Expressway. While one of them will be on Tarafdarpara Lane on the west of Nabanna, the other near the Kona Expressway police outpost located east of the secretariat. The third park will be near the Sanjib Dutta Krirangan in Mandirtala on the north of Nabanna.
The run down pond located in Mollapara, a little ahead of Kazipara close to Kona Expressway, will get a facelift. Besides upgrading its embankments, an ice hillock will be installed on one of its banks along with battery-operated moving penguin figures. HMC will also install a sound and light system with colours around the icy structure changing to the tunes of Rabindra sangeet playing all day.
Announcing the beautification project, HMC’s borough VI chairman Saikat Chowdhury on Tuesday said, “A sum of Rs 1.60 crores will be spent on the three parks while beautification of the pond will involve an expenditure of another Rs 50-60 lakh.”
The beautification project will be supervised by HMC’s artist architect, Jitendra Singh. HMC recently undertook a major beautification project along a 7 km stretch of Drainage Canal Road under Singh’s supervision.
