KOLKATA: A gang of burglars decamped with cash and jewellery worth over Rs 10,00,000 from a flat at Southern Avenue in South Kolkata on Sunday evening.

KOLKATA: A gang of burglars decamped with cash and jewellery worth over Rs 10,00,000 from a flat at Southern Avenue in South Kolkata on Sunday evening. Police said the gang had burgled the second-floor flat of Abinash Apartment when the owner, Prakash Saha, went to visit a relative. On returning, Saha found his flat was ransacked and all the jewellery and cash from the almirahs were missing.
He had withdrawn Rs 3,50,000 from the bank just the day before to pay for the registration of this flat, where he moved in six months ago.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the burglars had scaled the rain-water pipe to reach the balcony of the flat that was not locked. They then removed the grill of the kitchen and entered. They left by the same route, too, said the police. A local gang with the help of some employees of the multi-storied apartment could have done the job, claimed the police.
Security guard Rabin Jana, Banu, the cook and driver Rabi were interrogated. Saha, runs an advertising and a packaging business at Moulali. On Sunday, he went to his relative’s house with wife Jyoti, son Vishal and daughter Sneha. The police further said that an organised gang was operating in Tollygunge and the neighbouring Lake police station area. On Saturday, the flat of Gour Renu Ganguli, who stays alone at Lake Avenue, was burgled of an expensive colour television, two music systems and a briefcase of valuable documents.One Prabir Sardar was arrested. The TV and a music system were recovered.
