KOLKATA: A patient's death at SSKM Hospital led the family to lodge a complaint with the hospital authorities on Tuesday, with allegations of medical negligence. The hospital administration has constituted a committee to probe the allegations.

The patient, Akash Nayak, was brought to the emergency wing around midnight on Monday with intestinal obstruction. He was treated and discharged soon. But minutes after he was taken home, his condition deteriorated, alleged the relatives. Within two hours he was taken back to the hospital, but the doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Relatives and locals who accompanied the patient claimed he was not properly attended to by the doctors and started protesting. The police interfered and brought the situation under control, but the patient's relatives went back on Tuesday to lodge a complaint.

"How can a patient whom the doctors announced fine after treatment die within two hours? Did they treat him at all? If this is not medical negligence what is it?" said a relative of the deceased.

Since the hospital has seen a series of assaults on junior doctors on emergency duty in the recent past, the police team posted there has been reinforced. Thus, vandalism could be averted on Monday night.

"A probe will be conducted based on the comlpaint," said Karabi Boral, medical superintendent and vice principal of SSKM Hospital.

''''This message is from Kerala, India. Death of a 24 year old lady on 14/12/2004 without any disease which can be proved from the original case sheet (in the court) due to antibiotic abuse. Injection Ampicillin 500 mgs (by accused 2) was intravenously given at 11.A.M. after a botched up technique of test dose on the above mentioned date. The patient developed breathlessness, pulse became absent and blood pressure became non record-able at 11.15.A.M. Then one doctor(accused 1) came and gave injection Diazepam instead of inj.Adrenaline for anaphylactic reaction of inj.Ampicillin . The patient died. Criminal case no:1675/11 is before the Additional Sessions Court V Kollam, Kerala under I.P.C. 304 Part(II). Then this patient was referee-dd to another hospital with a reference letter (original is present in the court) in which both injections Ampicillin and Diazepam are not mentioned. . The Kollam district consumer forum awarded 15 lakhs on 24/12/2012. But the two doctors who gave injections Ampicillin and Diazepam moved the Kerala state consumer forum at Trivandrum. The hearing is fixed for 28/9/16. . The High Court of Kerala site can be assessed. Kindly go through the Kerala High Court judgments 21402/2009, 1394/13, 296/14 and 1903/14. The criminal revision petitions 4/16(by A 2) and 6/16 (by A 3) is pending. The hearing was on 13/7/16. The petition is before Justice Sunil Thomas. I feel the first accused who gave injection Diazepam is suffering from Dunning-Kruger effect.
