kolkata: the kolkata-based centre for research in indo-bangladesh relations has decided to send a memorandum to the central government to initiate diplomatic measures to stop atrocities on minorities in bangladesh. the research centre will also appeal to the amnesty international drawing attention of the international human rights organisation to the plight of minorities in bangladesh.
centre director bimal pramanik said on tuesday that this decision was after two resolutions were passed at a seminar, the recent plight of minorities in bangladesh - a post election scenario, held in the city on monday. citing a report in janakantha - a bangladeshi daily highlighting atrocities on a minority family at baufal, pramanik said that intimidation by political parties continue even after the elections held four months ago. till mid-december, more than 3,000 families - comprising more than 15,000 people - had sought assistance from different voluntary relief agencies working in the border areas between west bengal and bangladesh, according to pramanik. most of these people are yet to return home. however, they are afraid to disclose their identities since the centre had not declared these people as 'refugees' and was treating them as infiltrators.
