Rain relief unlikely for Kol before weekend: Met

Kolkata: The Met office has sounded a heatwave alert for Kolkata’s neighbouring south Bengal districts till Thursday even as the real-feel temperature in the city soared above 50°C for the third consecutive day on Monday, when the maximum temperature touched 37.6°C. The conditions are likely to improve by Friday with a thunderstorm across the region. According to Met officials, south Bengal must suffer for at least three more days as thundershowers are likely break the heat spell by the weekend. “At least 50% of every district is likely to get thunderstorms between June 14 and 15. We cannot yet say the spell may trigger the onset of southwest monsoon in south Bengal,” said Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) head Somenath Dutta.On Monday, the northern limit of the southwest monsoon had reached Islampur in North Dinajpur, after entering north Bengal on May 31. This year was the first time in 15 years that monsoon entered Bengal in May. An anti-cyclone prevailing between north and south Bengal and again between south Bengal and the Bay of Bengal has delayed the onset of monsoon in Kolkata. The weekend thunderstorms may trigger the dispersal of the anti-cyclone, although it is too early to determine. Kolkata has been experiencing gruelling conditions due to the double impact of the heat and high humidity, which reached 85% on Monday. Moisture incursions from the Bay have been restricted to lower levels of the atmosphere. The westerly winds dominating over the region have been pushing the moisture closer the the ground. The Sun’s glare due to scanty clouds in the sky has also contributed to the real-feel staying above 50°C.Extreme heat and humidity may trigger a localized convection storm in city over the next few days but the chances are slim. On Tuesday, the maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 38°C and 30°C, respectively.
