Tala Park police are investigating the case even as the missing person squad of detective department is assisting them in the probe.
Investigators said that Singh had stepped out of his hostel on Saturday around 3.30pm but never returned. He was wearing a T-shirt, shorts and slippers when he left the hostel. “He left his mobile phones and wallet at the hostel room. He had informed friends that he was going on an errand and would return shortly. Prima facie, it seems he had gone alone. We also found that some important data had been deleted from his mobile phones,” said Subhankar Sinha, DC (north).
Sleuths said that when he did not return till evening, his friends started worrying. They informed Abhijit’s local guardians who live in Salt Lake. They rushed in and searched for a couple of hours. When they failed to trace him, the hospital officials consulted them and informed the police. “We have registered a missing case on Saturday night,” said Sinha.
According to sources in the R G Kar Medical College and North division police, Abhijit had passed his first year exam with flying colours and was known to keep to himself. His friends insisted he had shown no signs of anxiety or depression of late. “Since he was not carrying anything important with him and knew few places in Kolkata, the search for him will be difficult. We are in touch with Muzzafarpur police in this regard through the detective department,” said a senior investigating officer.
This is not the first time that an R G Kar student went missing under mysterious circumstances. A few years ago, another second-year student of R G Kar was found roaming aimlessly in Rampurhat town after he went missing from the college hostel. Doctors initially thought he was given some drug-laced eatables on the train but tests proved that was not the case. “We have seen several persons who were drugged on trains. But tests and several rounds of questioning failed to lead us anywhere in this particular case. So, we concluded that he had a psychiatric problem,” recalled an officer at the Tala Park police station.
