HOWRAH: Sk Salauddin, 40, alias Silua, the man who allegedly led the gang of killers who shot and hacked promoter Gautam Roy to death in Howrah on Thursday, was arrested from Dankuni in Hooghly on Monday. He was produced before a court and sent to 10 days in police custody.
According to the police, Salauddin is a proclaimed offender and had two warrants pending against him for murder when killed Roy.
It is still not clear though, if he had a personal score to settle against the promoter or was he a hired killer. simply a gun on hire.
Roy's murder in the Sambhu Halder Lane of Malipanchghara caused major ripples.
The promoter was chased by the armed gang for nearly 400 metres in broad daylight till he was trapped against a locked collapsible gate. The goons then shot him from close range and slashed the body with choppers. The killers then walked out of the locality in a brazen manner., brandishing their weapons and terrorizing residents.
The confidence displayed by the miscreants led the police to suspect that the gang knew the area well.
Around 4.30am on Monday, acting on a tip-off, the police raided a hideout in the Chakundi Sarkar Para of Dankuni and arrested Salauddin. A chopper and a firearm were seized from him. It is being suspected that the criminal took shelter in this house after the promoter's murder. While Salauddin's in-laws live in Dankuni,
Salauddin is originally from the Votebagan area of Ghusurion Joy Bibi Road in Howrah's Malipanchghara. This is close to where the murder took place.
"Salauddin was a thief and snatcher. Over the years, he graduated to murder and was also involved in promoting. It is still not clear whether he was himself in the business or worked for somebody else. Roy was probably murdered by people with whom he had a rivalry over jurisdiction. His rivals may have been unhappy with him as Roy took up projects in several parts of Howrah. Roy also had a criminal history. We will have to find out if he had earlier been close to Salauddin and others before falling out with them and going it alone
There are at least five cases pending against Salauddin, two of these are murder charges in Bally police station. Two of these are murder charges," an officer said.
Interrogation has revealed that the gang had made an attempt on Roy's life on November 30 this year. After this attempt failed, the gang is suspected to have gone underground near Digha. There, they seem to have made plans for another strike and carried it out on Thursday. During interrogation, Salauddin is said to have spilled the beans on eight to nine people who were part of the gang. The police are trying to find out if the gang members are hired killers and also operate in the Hooghly district.
"Salauddin will undergo thorough interrogation. We will also take him to the spot and reconstruct the crime. He played a very important role in the murder, no doubt, but we will also have to find out who the others were. We will also have to find out if Roy was also part of the group to which Salauddin belonged. After all, the dead promoter also had cases against him," said Sukesh Jain, deputy commissioner (headquarters), Howrah Police.
Deputy public prosecutor of Howrah, Payel Ghosh Banerjee said that Salauddin was produced before a court and remanded to 10 days in police custody. "He made a statement before the court," the state
