KHARAGPUR: Tapan Das, the prime accused in a racket in fake stamp papers, to the tune of a whopping Rs 53 lakh, was arrested by the CID from Kharagpur on Wednesday.
A CID team from Bhabani Bhavan had raided Das's house on the night of July 14 and recovered non-judicial stamp papers worth Rs 50 lakh and court fee papers worth Rs 3 lakh. Sleuths confirmed the papers to be fake.
On examining the papers, sleuths confirmed they were fake.
Das was asked to explain how he had got hold of the so many fraud stamp papers. When he failed to offer an explanation at Kharagur police station, he was taken into custody and produced in the Midnapore CJM Chief Judicial Magistrate's court that remanded him in police custody for 10 days.
