Police track cell tower, arrest cabby

Kolkata: The woman broke her teeth and received other injuries. Some residents rushed to her help and called the Tollygunge police.
The injured woman was given first aid at the police station. The cops also retrieved the driver’s phone number from inDrive, the service provider. Since the service, a relatively new one, did not have a dedicated monitoring system, the cops checked CCTV footage and cellphone tower signals to track down the driver.
“The driver, Md Asfaque, was arrested from Palm Avenue around 1.45am, two-and-a-half hours after the incident. The cab was also seized, and the complainant’s mobile phone was recovered. The accused will remain in police custody until February 28,” said joint CP (crime) Murlidhar Sharma.
TOI sent a query to inDrive to find out what — if any — steps they planned to take against the errant driver, but there was no reply yet at the time of going to press.
