Police glare on cars with tinted windows
KOLKATA: Police have launched a drive against cars with tinted windows following a kidnap bid on a third-year law student.
Early on Saturday, the car used by Trinamool MP and actress Satabdi Roy was stopped on Jatindra Mohan Avenue for having tinted windows. "Roy was not in the car, which had a beacon and was hired from a travel agency. We nabbed the driver," said a senior traffic officer.
Hundreds of cars were fined for the same reason in different parts of the city.

Officers from police stations and traffic guards were engaged in the crackdown. Senior officers hinted that the drive would continue for a few more days.
Police said the offending cars were prosecuted under Section 100(2) of Central Motor Vehicle Rule. According to the law, the car owner has to ensure that the windows allow at least 70% visibility.
Though the act has existed for years, a majority of car owners do not obey it. Police have also done little to rein in errant drivers. But this time, senior officers have claimed that they will continue the operation stringently. The offending car owners and drivers were fined Rs 100 as per the rule.
Senior officers also admitted that several police and VVIP cars also violate the same rule and assured that the act will be implemented stringently for their own cars as well.
