kolkata: poems by seven bengali women — begum sufia kamal, rajlukshmee debee, ketaki kushari dyson, sahela chowdhury debarati mitra, susmita bhattacharya and shamim azad - have been selected for inclusion in a prestigious sheffield libraries publication in 2001. four of them were either born in kolkata or had connexions with the city. others had their origin in bangladesh.
"some of these poets are already famous names in bangladesh and west bengal, and all are poets whose work deserve greater recognition outside of their countries," according to joint editor debjani chatterjee. titled my birth was not in vain, the publication focuses on only seven poets as it has been possible to devote more space for their poems.
