KOLKATA: At least 24 persons were injured in clashes after one woman was knocked down and killed by a Tata Sumo vehicle near Behala tram depot on the southern fringe of the city on Monday morning.

twenty five-year-old malati raut was knocked down by a tata sumo on diamond harbour road, near behala tram depot, at around 11.45am on monday. malati died on the spot. in an attempt to escape from the spot, the driver knocked down five others. malati, hailed from sagar island, stayed in sarisha as an adopted daughter of urmila mitra. on monday morning she came to vidyasagar hospital at tram depot for mitra's treatment. the accident occurred when malati and urmila were crossing the road. soon after the accident irate locals went on rampage at the place. they gheraoed the tata sumo. the driver was dragged out of the vehicle. an angry mob started beating the driver, who was later rescued by the police. the rescue of the driver further infuriated the mob. they started hurling brickbats to the passing vehicles and later set the sumo ablaze. the vehicle was completely damaged before fire brigade personnel and some local residents managed to douse the flames. a section of the mob even attacked the police. the police carried out a mild lathicharge on the mob to bring the situation under control. the locals then blocked the vital arterial route, diamond harbour road for more than a half an hour. the mob refused to hand over the body to the police for a long time. after much persuasion the body was allowed to be removed from the place. others injured -- teharul molla(50), sandhya das(40) and manti lama (4) -- were rushed to local hospital. ganguly said that the tata sumo driver had been arrested. he, however, refused to disclose the identity of the accused. ganguly also confirmed that the situation was normal, though tension prevailed in the area. a police picket was posted at the place of occurrence.
