KOLKATA: Kalighat Police on Wednesday arrested,
Kaushik Roy alias Bappa (36), who claimed to be a personal assistant of
Trinamool Congress MP
Abhishek Banerjee and extorted huge sum of money from road contractors in east Midnapore.
The accused is a resident of Chanditala Lane in
Regent Park
but he claimed be a resident of Kalighat.
"We have taken him under police custody for a day and will investigate the case. We are trying to recover the extorted amount," said joint CP (crime), Vishal Garg.
Police said the complaint was initially lodged by Subhankar Bose, a staff at Abhishek's office.
Sources said he was held after some road contractors approached the leader asking him to step in. Cops are also trying to ascertain whether Roy had any accomplices.
