NRI Bengalis in Canada launch a social media group to help new immigrants

Be it for work, marriage, or for whatever reason, you can take a Bengali away from Kolkata, but you cannot take Kolkata away from a Bengali. Leaving those familiar lanes and by-lanes, the tea shops, and never-ending adda are some of the things you cannot actually forget. So, to help the Bengali immigrants in

Canada

, the local Bengali association has started a Facebook group. Besides, remembering the old city, the group – Kolkata Days – helps the new Bengali immigrants in every possible way.

It is a social media group with about 800 expatriates living in Canada and

Toronto

, where members are referred to as

jonogon

. Their goal is to be with each other sharing joys and sorrows of life.

Talking about the initiative,

Renu Chanda

, one of the members, said that many migrate to Canada from Kolkata for various reasons. “The first thing you need is a job. The members of this group help new immigrants get in touch with the right people. Similarly, you will get the contact of local car dealers and the contacts of the best restaurants,” she added.

Extreme winter prevails in Canada for six to seven months when outdoor activities are reduced to zero. To make those freezing months enjoyable, the group organises gatherings and adda, where the members can talk about

Uttam-Suchitra

to

Mohunbagan-East Bengal

and more.
