No respite till at least Wed, says Met
Kolkata: Alipore weathermen have warned city residents against unnecessary sun exposure until at least Wednesday. Meanwhile, the maximum temperature dipped a notch to 38.7°C on Saturday from Friday’s 39.6°C.Although the heat’s extent is not sufficient to be officially declared a heat wave, the real feel impact on the human body, especially children and the elderly, is enough to trigger nausea, seizures, vomiting and heat strokes, weathermen said. RMC director G K Das said, “Until at least Wednesday, the maximum is likely to remain between 38°C and 39°C. The chances of the maximum crossing 40°C is fairly slim. The impact will remain like that of a heat wave.” In at least 10 districts of Bengal, the temperature crossed 40°C on Saturday, with Bankura’s maximum reaching 42°C. RMC has issued guidelines for protection against the heat including regular hydration, avoiding strenuous activities under the sun and wearing loose-fitted clothing. By Wednesday, a weather system is likely to form over Kolkata and its neighbouring districts which could break the heat with a thunderstorm or two.
