BURDWAN: Cattle were spotted travelling luxury class by locals who stopped a bus from Bihar at Chakdighi area in Memari, East Burdwan district, on Friday.

The luxury bus filled with dozens of bovines was travelling on the Grand Trunk Road. Locals said they stopped the vehicle at Memari as a bovine had stumbled out when the driver had braked.

Suspecting it to be a case of cattle smuggling, they informed Memari police station. Police searched the vehicle and said bus driver was able to furnish valid documents. However, locals claimed that the vehicle was headed towards Pandua animal haat, a local cattle market.

When contacted, Debashish Nag, officer in charge of Memari police station, said since the driver had valid documents no criminal charges could be brought and there was no valid legal ground to detain the driver or the vehicle. Similar views were expressed by Sadar SDPO Abhishek Mondal.
