KOLKATA: Amit Das, a daily labourer, was arrested on Monday for abandoning his four-day-old son near Belghoria railway station on Sunday night. The infant was rescued by local residents.Amit and his wife Uma were spotted by local residents at Atul Chandra Chatterjee Lane around 9.30 pm on Sunday. The couple was also seen dumping a small bundle wrapped in clothes at the corner of the street.
They then left in a hurry.
Within minutes, local residents heard the cry of a baby emanating from the corner where the couple had dumped the bundle. A crowd rushed to the spot and opened the bundle and found a newborn male infant inside. Sanjit Saha, one of the local residents who had noticed the couple dump the bundle, gave chase on a bike and managed to catch them. He brought the couple back to the locality. When an angry mob grilled the couple, Amit and Uma revealed their identities. They were from Bisarpara in Birati. The couple, however, showed no signs of remorse for the act. Soon, police were summoned and they took the couple to Belghoria police station. A couple from the locality - Ranjit, son of an eminent cardiologist and his wife Gopa Chatterjee - provided shelter to the baby for the night. Later, Uma fell ill and was admitted to Sagar Dutta Hospital. Amit was arrested early on Monday. During interrogation, Amit admitted that he and Uma had eloped against their families' will. "Uma apparently became pregnant before her marriage to Amit. His mother had threatened the couple that she would not accept them if they returned home with a child," said a police officer. The infant was later admitted to Sagar Dutta Hospital on Monday morning for a medical check-up. He was later handed over to Cini Asha, a city-based NGO. A couple from the locality - Sunil Hela, a bank employee and his wife Madhuri - have expressed their desire to adopt the baby.
