Nagerbazar gets festive make-up with colourful flyover pillars

Kolkata: A beautification drive ahead of Poila Baisakh has turned the section under the Nagerbazar flyover, also known as Ramkrishna Paramahansa Setu, into a vibrant zone, with pillars being painted in vibrant colours and in different styles. Additionally, the median stretch below the flyover on Jessore Road in the South Dum Dum municipality area is being renovated with a green verge and street furniture to bring in a fresh and green look."The area beneath the Nagerbazar flyover has been beautified, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the city, to create a more pleasant and pedestrian-friendly space utilising funds from local MLA Aditi Munshi's local area development (LAD) scheme," a govt official said. About Rs 29 lakh has been spent on the beautification job. Most of the 35 pillars of the flyover have been freshly painted and now sport alpanas and other designs to give them an aesthetic look. There are also colourful paintings with drawings of terracotta art. Earlier, some portions of the median stretch below the flyover used to be occupied by street vendors and the area used to be a mess. This stretch has been cleared and renovated with new plants, greenery and street furniture, like murals."The stretch below the flyover is now looking great and has a fresh, clean and green look. It is good that the beautification has been done," said Sharmistha Ganguly, a local resident.The beautification follows similar initiatives taken up recently in other places. About a 100-metre stretch below Baguiati flyover on VIP Road, which earlier used to be a garbage dump yard, has been converted into a bursting hangout zone with a football and cricket arena, and zones for zumba, skating and a pet park.
