Mukherjee, Chakraborty honoured

Kolkata: It was sometime in the year 1974-75. A young girl was asked to bowl to some senior Bengal men’s cricketers at the nets.
A former Bengal skipper was one of those men who faced the youngster and got bowled after being completely deceived by the left-arm spinner.
On Saturday, years later the two shared the stage to be conferred with the Kartick Bose Lifetime Achievement Award at the Cricket Association of Bengal’s (CAB) annual awards ceremony in the city. Raju Mukherjee, who was at the receiving end that day, remembers it vividly even today and spoke highly about Sharmila Chakraborty, who too was honoured.
“I have not seen any better left-arm women spinner than Sharmila in India,” Mukherjee stated about Chakraborty who represented India in the first women’s Test match against West Indies in 1976.
