More dengue deaths reported from hospitals

girl and a 35-year-old man from Kadihati died of

dengue

at the Beliaghata ID Hospital and the Calcutta Medical College Hospital, respectively, in the past two days.

Riya Sarkar, a resident of New Town's Pramod Nagar, was first taken to the Beliaghata hospital on November 11. The hospital had then refused admission, her family claimed. She was again brought back to the hospital on Sunday after she complained of high fever. She was admitted and didn’t survive long. She died at 12:15pm. The death certificate refrains from mentioning the word dengue but cites all its symptoms, including the fact that she had tested NS1 reactive.

The second death took place on Sunday evening. Suman Dey, the victim, had been admitted to the hospital on October 31 with high fever. He passed away at 8.15pm and his death certificate stated ‘dengue with multi-organ dysfunction’ as the cause of death.

Scores in Dey’s neighbourhood at the North Dum Dum municipality area are suffering from dengue. Areas like Kestopur, Prafullakanan,

Bidhannagar

Municipal Corporation area have been among the worst-hit in North 24 Parganas this year.

Even though residents of Kestopur and Baguiati areas complained that the civic authorities were not taking adequate steps to prevent the dengue outbreak, civic authorities refused to agree. Bidhannagar corporation MMiC (health) Pranay Roy said the number of cases were slowly coming down.

Meanwhile, dengue deaths continued at Deganga. Zainur Bibi, 52, died at the Barasat Hospital on Sunday evening. According to her family, she had tested positive for dengue but the hospital mentioned septicemia as the cause of death.
