KOLKATA: In 2019, it was hard to miss them in Parliament. Dressed elegantly in saris and armed with eloquence, they were TMC's faces for the future.
Somewhere down the line, actors Mimi Chakraborty and Nussrat Jahan either fell out of favour or failed to keep up with Bengal's politics. On Friday, the Tollywood duo were among the five sitting MPs who were replaced with new faces for Jadavpur and Basirhat constituencies, respectively.
Mimi had always been considered a "lightweight" in a constituency once represented by CM Banerjee. Last month, she submitted her resignation and expressed her desire to take a step back and return to her world. Mimi's replacement Saayoni Ghosh has TMC leadership's ears. Nussrat had faced criticism within and outside TMC over her absence from Sandeshkhali in her constituency ever since the Jan 5 unrest.
On March 7, Saayoni was quoted as saying that Nussrat should have stood by the people of Sandeshkhali as an elected representative. Islam, the current Haroa MLA and a former Basirhat MP, said though he was president of the party's unit in Basirhat, he hadn't spoken against Nussrat.
"In the last election, I gave Nussrat a lead of 1 lakh votes. Maybe the party thought she is not fit for the job anymore. I have always performed whenever the party had entrusted any job to me."
Nussrat was unavailable for comment.
