KOLKATA: Reacting to the development of a weather system in the east-central Bay of Bengal which may escalate into a cyclonic storm in the first week of October, Kolkata weathermen have predicted a possible low pressure area in the region by September 28.
While the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has not made any forecasts yet, Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) director GK Das said, “It is too early to determine how the weather system will develop and where it will make a landfall if it develops into a cyclone. By Monday, there would be more information to determine the nature of the system and the places it will impact. The system will strengthen by at least September 28.”
On Thursday, meteorologist Jason Nicholls of Accuweather, an international forecasting agency tweeted, “Conditions can become conducive for low and perhaps a cyclone to develop in the Bay of Bengal late next week or during the 1st week of October.” If a cyclone materializes, it will be called ‘Tej’, a name given by India.
Some sources have speculated that if the system develops into a cyclone it will impact coastal Andhra Pradesh and Odisha along with Bengal. The system is likely to intensify rainfall over the week. Currently, a cyclonic circulation passing over eastern India has been bringing intense rainfall to north Bengal districts. In South Bengal , the rainfall has been light to moderate. The Alipore station recorded 16mm on Friday.

Marine heatwaves in Bay of Bengal most intense from 2016-20
Climate change has led to an increasing number of marine heatwaves in the Bay of Bengal, according to a study by researchers at IIT-Kharagpur. The study found that there were an average of three heatwaves per year in the region between 1982 and 2021, with the number increasing at a rate of 1.1 per decade. The most intense heatwaves occurred between 2016 and 2020. The warming in this region is greater than in other marine regions, and the consequences include an increased probability of cyclones and changes in fish migration patterns.
Moderate rainfall in Old Mysuru region
The water level in the KRS dam in Mysuru has fallen below the 97ft mark, but the region received moderate rainfall on Sunday. Mysuru city witnessed a sudden downpour, causing disruptions to the Ganesha festival shopping. The dam's water level reached 96.9ft, with inflow and outflow recorded. Moderate rainfall was reported in various districts, including Chamarajanagar and Kodagu. The forecast predicts further rain in the coming days in certain districts. Meanwhile, preparations for the Ganesha festival are underway with guidelines to avoid water pollution.
