Md Sporting win 6-0, but miss quarters bus

Kolkata: How often will one see players sink to their knees on the ground after winning a match 6-0 — not in delight, but in despair! That’s exactly what Mohammedan Sporting players went through at the end of their final Durand Cup group match at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan on Sunday.Mehrajuddin Wadoo’s side had a mountain to climb in keeping their survival hopes alive when they took on Jamshedpur FC’s youngsters in Group B. With Mumbai City FC already qualified from the group with an all-win record, Mohammedan Sporting — having managed just three points in two games and a minus-one goal difference — needed to win by at least 7 goals to advance to the quarterfinals as one of the two best runners-up teams. Their in-form striker David Lalhlansanga lit up an inspired, almost odds-defying show, scoring four goals as the home team ran roughshod over their hapless opponents. Mohammedan Sporting eventually won 6-0 and missed the passage to quarterfinals by a whisker. Mohun Bagan SG — with 6 points and plus-6 goal difference — joined Northeast United FC (7 points) in the last-8 stage as one of the two best-placed runners-up. Mohammedan Sporting finished with 6 points and a plus-5 goal difference. Had they scored once more, they would have pipped Mohun Bagan to the quarterfinals by dint of scoring more goals. Right from the word go, a determined Mohammedan Sporting went about scripting what looked like nothing but a miracle. Two quick goals from Lalremsenga (10 and 16 minutes) put the home team in form control and David got his first in the 28th minute as they went into the break with a handsome 3-0 lead and keeping their hopes afloat. The one-way traffic continued in the second half and David completed his hat-trick scoring two more in the 69 and 82 minutes. In between, Ashley Koli earned a penalty for Jamshedpur FC in a rare chance for the second-string Jamshedpur. But Koli’s resultant spot-kick was poor with Mohammedan Sporting goalkeeper Lalbiakhlua Jongte saving it without a fuss. David then got his fourth — and the team’s sixth — in the 89th minute as the home side threw everything in search of more goals. Alexis Gomez, Prince Opoku and Ganesh Besra came close to completing the job but failed to find the target as Mohammedan Sporting won but missed the quarterfinal bus by a whisker.
