Max may touch 40°C, rain likely after May 11: Met
Kolkata: While a low pressure area that has formed in the southeast Bay of Bengal is heading towards Myanmar and set to bring thunderstorms to various districts, including Kolkata, by the weekend, the city could remain warm with maximum temperature hovering around 40°C till Thursday. After delays in the formation of the low pressure — crucial for determining the path and intensification of Mocha — the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) issued a bulletin stating that the low pressure has formed over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman Sea on Monday morning. “It is likely to intensify into a depression on May 9 over the same region and further into a cyclonic storm over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of East-central Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea on May 10. It is likely to move initially north-northwestwards till May 11,” said the bulletin.Thereafter, it is likely to recurve gradually and move north-northeastwards towards Bangladesh-Myanmar coasts. After the landfall on May 11, Kolkata and different districts of Bengal, particularly the western ones, may get thundershowers. Till Thursday, the temperature will continue to soar to near or above 40°C in many districts, including Kolkata. The first half of this week may resemble heatwave-like conditions in Kolkata, with a chance of temperatures crossing 40°C for two days in a row.RMC director, GK Das, said, “The humidity in the atmosphere is unusually low for May. The hot and uncomfortable weather may turn for a worse with a dry heat causing a burning sensation on the skin.”The intensity of thundershowers in Kolkata has not been determined yet, but it is likely to be clear by Wednesday. While Kolkata clocked a maximum temperature of 38.5°C on Monday, it may increase a notch every consecutive day. The highest temperature recorded in the state was 42°C in Bankura.
