Manabi gets Kalyani University executive council post

KOLKATA: The first transgender principal of a college,

Manabi Bandyopadhyay

, has now made it to the executive council of

Kalyani University

. The invitation letter, informing

Bandyopadhyay

that she was the vice-chancellor's nominee to the university's executive council, reached her on Tuesday.

She has been invited to attend the forthcoming EC meeting on September 23, which happens to be her birthday. “Krishnagar

Women

's College, of which I am principal, is affiliated to Kalyani University. I am extremely honoured to think that my university has considered me worthy of being part of its EC,“ she said.

The executive council is the highest decision making body of a university for its day to day activities and meets once a month.“Manabi is an accomplished person and has been doing a lot of activism for the cause of the third gender. We are sure she will be able to enlighten us about issues related to the betterment of the third gender within the university's ambit. Recently, we have admitted the first transgender student -Sumana Pramanik -in our PG programme, with Manabi's help,“ said university registrar Suvas Sarkar.

Born Somnath Bandyopadhyay, she went for a sex change operation to become a trans-woman.
