Man suffering from pancreatitis for 14 years sees ray of hope after procedure at Kolkata hospital
KOLKATA: A 35-year-old Kolkata banker who had suffered multiple attacks of pancreatitis in the past 14 years and had undergone surgeries and procedures to treat the condition in different hospital in the city as well as in other states.
But the attacks and pain continued to haunt him forcing him to depend on morphine group of injections every two hours to kill the pain. Pratik Choudhury now sees a ray of hope after undergoing a surgery at a Kolkata hospital.
Choudhury had undergone at least 5 surgical interventions and hospital admissions often. The pain had almost pinned him down on the bed. His job was at stake as he had to stay away from work frequently due to the attacks and the pain. Recently he was operated upon by Dr Suddhasattwa Sen after which he no longer required the pain killer injections.
“It was a very diificult re-do of the Frey’s operation in the patient’s already scarred abdomen. The heard of the pancreas was cored out extensively and the poorly dilated pancreatic duct was chiselled, opened and bypassed for drainage,” said GI surgeon Suddhasattwa Sen who operated on the patient ay Ashok Nursing Home in Jodhpur Park.
“Pancreatic pain is multifactorial of which two major reasons are intraductal hypertension ie high pressure as pancreatic juice cannot drain out and also head of pancreas which has pacemaker cells and stellate cells which cause severe debilitating pain and crippling. Hence cutting major part of head removed such pacemaker cells and ductal drainage allows free flow of juice unobstructed,” explained Dr Sen.
Already on normal diet Choudhury said he is looking forward to a pain free life and report back to work. His sugar levels have also stabilized. The 35-year-old will however continue medical therapy
“I had been leading a miserable life for 14 years and as my condition had become chronic I had started losing hope. Now after this procedure I am seeing a ray of hope for a normal life,” said Chowdhury.
