PURBA BOALIA (SOUTH 24 PARGANAS): A woman, seven months pregnant, was brutally killed by her husband, who suspected she was involved in an illicit relationship, on Tuesday. The husband later committed suicide by hanging himself from the rafter of their rented house in Purba Boalia in Sonapur police station area.
The body of Ruma (22) bore signs of extreme vengeance.
Her husband Koushik first strangled her, said police. She was probably stripped after that and her hands were tied to window grills. Then, with a
bonti (cutter), he repeatedly assaulted her on the chest and hands. But the most severe blows were on the legs, which were nearly severed from the body.
"It must be the result of pent-up anger and vengeance against his wife, otherwise such brutality is not very common in murder cases. After killing her, Koushik hanged himself from the rafter with a rope. No suicide note was found," said an officer. Ruma was scheduled to give birth this October. Both the bodies were sent for post-mortem.
Koushik was a mechanic by profession. Ruma's mother Sandhya Das said: "He came to our house to repair the TV. Soon, he struck up a friendship with my daughter. Within 15 days, she left our house and got married secretly. We hoped she would lead a happy life. But look what happened..."
Koushik's landlady Durga Jana said: "The couple used to quarrel a lot. The husband used to suspect his wife. Of late, it appeared that they were living in peace. We are completely clueless what suddenly led to this incident."
