According to police, they were receiving complaints of valuables, especially laptop bags going missing from parked buses, both operated by state transport corporation and private agencies, minutes before their departure. In several cases, the victims had left the bags unattended on their seats and stepped down to buy things from the adjoining stalls. After they returned, they found their laptops and other costly items missing.

"We received a complaint from a city doctor recently and launched the operation," said an officer. Cops posed as passengers and placed bags on bus seats last Thursday and alighted while a team of plainclothes cops kept a discreet watch. They then spotted a man, Monirul Islam, attempting to steal the bags. Police are interrogating him. A laptop has been recovered from his hideout in South 24 Parganas.
