KOLKATA: A low-pressure area that has formed over the Bay of Bengal moved slightly closer to the north Andhra-south Odisha coast on Thursday, raising chances of rain in Kolkata and south Bengal between Sunday and Tuesday. The city may receive moderate to heavy rain either on Sunday or Monday, said the Met office.

“It should further approach the Bengal and Odisha coasts, causing rain in the coastal districts of both the states. South Bengal and Kolkata will receive rain though it’s still early to predict if the showers are going to be heavy. But we expect the city to receive more than 50mm rain either on Sunday or Monday,” said Regional Meteorological Centre director G K Das.

Kolkata has recorded a rain deficit of 20% in August, the third consecutive month this season that it has had a shortfall following significant deficits in June and July.

With low-pressure systems being scarce over Bay of Bengal since the onset of monsoon, rain has been scanty and inconsistent so far. South Bengal, though, had a narrow 6% surplus in August.
