KOLKATA: The local firework association members have formed a cooperative — Maheshtala Budge Budge Fireworks Cluster Industrial Cooperative Society — and bought 6.7 acres to set up a 8.5-acre cluster for manufacturing green firecrackers. The rest — 1.8 acre — is vested land.
South 24 Parganas DM Sumit Gupta, local MLA Ashok Deb along with Rahul Goswami, SP of Diamond Harbour police district, visited the spot at Nandarampur on Friday.
Around 100 members have come together to purchase the land. After the recent accidents in the fireworks units in East Midnapore and Chingripota, CM Mamata Banerjee had announced setting up these clusters in the districts closer to the areas where the units are presently operating.
Sukdeb Naskar of the Maheshtala Budge Budge Atashbaji Association said they purchased a major part of the land for the early functioning of the cluster.
DM Sumit Gupta said the preliminary survey of the plot has been completed. He added that as another firework hub is located at Champahati, they are considering setting up another cluster in the adjoining Begumpur area.
