Legal aid defence counsel in 10 districts

Kolkata: Justice T S Sivagnanam, executive chairman of State Legal Services Authority (SLSA) and a judge of Calcutta High Court, inaugurated the legal aid defence counsel system in 10 districts of Bengal on Wednesday. Justice Sivagnanam said the system will cater to the marginalized section of the society with legal aid as the defence counsel will be on a full time job. Earlier, cases used to be allocated to the advocates who often remained busy.Justice Sivagnanam said they are planning to appoint retired district judges as well so that quality service can be offered through the legal aid. The secretary of SLSA, Raju Mukherjee, said they are trying to find out the unrepresented prisoners and provide them with legal aid for justice.
