Kolkata: Woman dies after fall in hospital
KOLKATA: The father of a woman filed a police complaint against Chittaranjan Seva & Shishu Sadan Hospital after her daughter died of a fall at the hospital washroom.
The woman, identified as Sarmishtha Basu Bhattacharya, had delivered a child on Sunday. On Wednesday, Sarmistha wanted to go to the washroom but since there were
Apparently, she slipped there and fell. She remained unattended for about 40 minutes until doctors and nurses attended her. Later, she did not respond to any treatment. The victim's father, Santosh Kumar Basu, accused the hospital of negligence and alleged that even the ayah engaged by the family to look after his daughter was missing when Sarmishtha went to the washroom.
The hospital has set up a seven-member inquiry committee to probe into the incident.
"We are going through the duty roster to find out who all were supposed to be in charge at that ward when the incident occurred. Once they have been identified, we shall question them to ascertain what actually happened. Action will be taken if anybody is found guilty of negligence. We will also go through the closed-circuit TV footage," a senior doctor at the hospital said.
According to a doctor, though women start walking a day after they undergoing C-sections, they remain weak and require assistance to even take a few steps.
It is possible that Sarmishtha hurt her abdomen, where the wound hadn't yet healed. Excessive bleeding may have caused her death.
