It took about 70 years after independence for somebody to organize a march like this to celebrate the Indian armed forces. It feels amazing to be here, said Retd. Col Ashish Das, who was present along with other defense personnel leading the rally.

A mass of about 3000 people comprising kids, house wives, senior citizens and of course the young and educated youth started this “Walk for Indian Armed Forces”on July 24, 2016 from the statue of Maharana Pratap after singing the national anthem Jan Gan Man. Almost every hand was waving the Indian national flag and almost every lip was chanting “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”.

“It is a actually a painful situation for us. Instead of celebrating the success of Indian armed forces in knocking down the terrorist like Burhan Wani some of the human right activists, communist leaders and a couple of media reporters are trying to glorify him as a hero, so we thought of standing beside our army although very late but we thought of at least for once telling them thank you for protecting us and maintaining the sovereignty of this great Nation. So we a group young patriotic youth who introduce ourselves as India First organized this event with support of another such People’s Platform for Social Reforms,” said Milind Choudhary a member of the organizing team.

Apart from Col. Ashish Das, armed personnel who were leading the rally were ex-IPS BP Saha, Retd Major Sanjoy, ex-SGT Air Force Animesh Mukhopadhyay and Retd Col Diptangshu. NCC cadets were also seen marching right behind them. Kolkata probably has never seen such rally drenched in patriotic colour. The people kept on shouting slogans like “Gaurav Hain Abhimaan Hain Sena Desh Ki Shaan Hain” and “Bhartiya Sena Jindabad Jindabad”.

The rally concluded by 5:30pm at Shyambazar 5 point crossing, where the crowd sang Jan Gan Man again this time after forming a human chain around the statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
