KOLKATA: Cops busted a cricket betting racket and arrested two from a bar near Exide crossing in the early hours of Sunday.
Police said they received a tip and arrested Ashish Agarwal (40) and Anand Agarwal (47) from Secret Lounge bar on AJC Bose Road shortly after midnight.
The two were charged under IPC sections related to cheating and under the West Bengal Gambling and Prize Competition Act, 1957, that prevents betting. The duo was produced in a chief metropolitan magistrate’s court, following which, they were remanded in police custody.
“The duo ran betting rackets all year round during various cricket tournaments in and around the city. They also collected large amounts of money from several people,” a Kolkata Police officer said.
A senior police officer told TOI they are increasingly vigilant about football betting rackets in the city as well, especially amidst the ongoing FIFA World Cup being held in Qatar.
India is currently playing cricket against New Zealand.
