KOLKATA: A teenager was killed when a cylinder exploded at an illegal garage on Canal East Road on Saturday. The garage owner, Gautam Halder, has been arrested and police have sealed his garage.
Karu Rabi Das, the 14-year-old local boy, was working at the garage for the past two years. His father Vedlal is an employee of Kolkata Municipal Corporation's conservancy department and his brother works under a railway contractor.
The accident took place around 9.30 am when Karu and another mechanic Prabhat Majhi were on duty. There were two gas cylinders at the garage. Suddenly, one of those exploded. Karu, who was working at a corner, was hit by a splinter in his head. He died on the spot. Majhi also received severe injuries in his face and hands and was admitted to NRS Medical College and Hospital.
Police later arrested the garage owner for not adhering to safety measures and running the garage by employing child labourers.
