KOLKATA: On the occasion of World Environment Day on Sunday, Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (

BMC

) took pledge to increase green cover of

Salt Lake

and Rajarhat and intensify its drive against use of plastic.

Due to weak soil pattern of the township, large number of trees fall in Salt Lake and surrounding areas during heavy rain and thunderstorm. The civic authorities have decided to plant small and medium sized flower or fruit trees, depending on the soil condition, on the roadsides as avenue plantation. BMC authorities are also conducting surveys to check present condition of large trees across the township. "All councillors are being urged to plant more trees in their respective wards," said BMC MMIC (environment) Rahima Bibi Mondal. The civic body will also assess if an uprooted tree can be replanted again.

"Councillors across BMC area have also started awareness campaign against plastic usage. Jute bags will be distributed across markets soon," said Mondal. BMC mayor

Krishna Chakraborty

along with MPs

Kakoli Ghosh

Dastidar, Sougata Roy, MLA and fire minister Sujit Bose marked World Environment Day by planting saplings inside Poura Bhavan premises.
