Kolkata set to lead country’s semicon revolution: Mamata

Kolkata: Kolkata is set to lead the semiconductor revolution in India following the announcement of GlobalFoundries’ (GF) project in the city, CM Mamata Banerjee said on Friday.“Due to GoWB’s relentless efforts to engage emerging technologies and harness investment potentials in the state, we have secured a major American investment proposal that highlights the state’s skill and potential,” Banerjee posted on X. A GF spokesperson told TOI that Webel officials had met key company officials in Bangalore on Thursday and extended all support.After meeting US consul general Kathy Giles-Diaz at Nabanna on Thursday, Banerjee announced that the Bengal govt had already identified land for the project. On Friday, expressing her gratitude to the US govt for the GF Kolkata Power Center, the CM wrote: “Fulfilling our aspirations of Biswa Bangla, the semiconductor facility may emerge to be a great multi-material fab for national security. A latest post by Government of India on Thursday also corroborates this. We are grateful to the US government and the corporate world for their overtures. Bengal will make its mark on the world map once again!” Giles-Diaz said she was very excited about the Kolkata semiconductor project. “It is good for the region and will play a role in the semiconductor supply chain,” she said. GF officials said the company was rapidly expanding its technology centre in Bangalore, which was involved in R&D, virtual fab operations, customer enablement and enabling support. “We will continue to strengthen our presence at both Bangalore and Kolkata centres. Officials from Webel met us to understand our plans and offered to extend any support we may need in West Bengal,” a GF spokesperson told TOI.
