KOLKATA: A woman constable who was on duty on VIP Road on Aug 14 night was severely injured when unruly hooligans pelted stones at policemen. Shampa Pramanik suffered injuries on her right eye and face and had to undergo a surgery.

"Pramanik was ensuring the safety of those walking on the street. She was holding position at her post when stones were pelted at on-duty policemen without provocation. One of the stones hit Shampa. Wasn't the night Shampa's too?" West Bengal police posted on their Facebook page.

"The crowd, some of them drunk, had suddenly become unruly. When we tried to stop them, they began damaging parked vehicles. Some of them even set a vehicle on fire and another group began stone pelting us," said a senior officer. Five persons were arrested in the case.
