Kolkata Police Detain Two After BJP-TMC Clash in Bansdroni over trying to extortion
Kolkata: Kolkata Police has detained two individuals following a violent clash between BJP and Trinamool workers at Brahmapur in the Bansdroni area.
While the BJP alleged that two of its members were severely assaulted for trying to stop an extortion racket, the TMC claimed the confrontation was entirely pre-planned by the saffron party.
The incident, which took place on the night of June 7, led to a formal written complaint being lodged by Nanda Baidya, 42, an active BJP worker and president of booth 291. Accordingly, the Bansdroni Police registered an FIR.
According to the FIR, Baidya received information that a group was allegedly extorting money in the Brahmapur Badamtala area.
Hoping to intervene, Baidya, accompanied by Amar Ghosh, the head of the local BJP Shakti Kendra, rushed to the spot at around 9.15 pm.
“We reached the spot and protested against the extortion. At that point, those individuals threatened us with death and severely assaulted us,” Baidya stated in his complaint.
The FIR names several accused, including Rajib Dev Chowdhury, owner of a local rice store, along with others identified as Raja Ghosh, Saibal Bhattacharya, Swapan Bhowmick and Rajdeep Das. The complainant alleged that the accused acted in criminal conspiracy, wrongfully restrained them and launched a physical assault using fists, blows and kicks, causing severe physical injuries.
The victims allegedly tried to resist the onslaught but were overpowered. Following the attack, both Baidya and Ghosh were rushed to MR Bangur Hospital, where they received medical treatment before being discharged. Medical documents have been submitted to the cops alongside the complaint.
A probe into the political clash is underway, and police pickets have been deployed to maintain law and order in the area.
