Kolkata: Police bust adoption racket, arrest 1

KOLKATA: Haridevpur cops have arrested a 46-year-old man, who had allegedly duped couples hoping to adopt kids in the city. Accused Ranjit Das even opened an NGO and claimed to make adoption process "hassle-free". The police, though, are yet to recover any child from his possession. At least two women - relatives of the accused - are also under cop probe.

"We are probing if any child was handed over. For now, we know that he has no CWC provision and has been defrauding people by charging money for his services," said DC (Behala) Saumya Roy.

Police said they were alerted after a few officers came across an advertisement in Haridevpur that stated, 'do you want to adopt a child, contact us in our Hermitage'.

"We contacted subscriber Das, who stated that he, along with his wife Madhabi Roy, sister-in-law Supriya and others now run a society - 'Sri Ramkrishna Natun Jibandan Sevashram'. He claimed they have also started to facilitate an easy adoption process for childless couples. Yet none of it seemed to have any clearance from CWC," said Roy.
