The accused — Tapan Das — posed as a representative of Kolkata-based Simplex Projects Ltd and even handed over forged work orders to the victims.

“Simplex has bagged a contract to construct roads in Dimapur. When this information went public, Das contacted two persons involved in construction business and promised them a sub-contract worth nearly Rs 200 crore in return for commission. Over the last few weeks, Das extracted several lakhs from them and finally handed over work orders that were forged,” a senior police officer said.

The matter came to light after the businessmen turned up in Kolkata and contacted the company. They said that they had paid Das a lot of money. Simplex lodged an FIR against Das at New Market police station and he was arrested. Das was produced in

Bankshall Court

on Thursday and remanded in police custody till July 5.
