At the Airfield Environment Management Committee meeting, chaired by home secretary Nandini Chakravorty on Saturday, officials of other civic bodies around the airport - Dum Dum Municipality, North Dum Dum Municipality, New Barrackpore Municipality, and Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation - were asked to replicate what Madhyamgram successfully did to minimise bird strikes.

Bird strikes have been a concern for airport operator and airlines, posing a threat to safety of planes and flyers. Garbage dumped in areas around airport is a major source of attraction for birds and a cause of these bird strikes.

At the meeting, airport officials pointed to the need to do away with the open garbage dumps at North Dum Dum, Dum Dum, New Barrackpore and areas under BMC.

Since 2015, there have been over 450 bird strike incidents at airport. TNN
