KOLKATA: A man practising as a surgeon with a private hospital in
New Town
was arrested on charges of
culpable homicide
not amounting to murder, cheating and faking his credentials as a doctor on Tuesday.
Acting on a complaint lodged by the son of a deceased person, whom the 'doctor' had operated last month, cops picked Bazlur Rahaman on Tuesday and have found in preliminary investigation that the degrees he procured as a doctor were apparently fake.
According to the complaint lodged by Dipankar Roy, a resident of
Barasat
in North 24 parganas, his father, Nikhil Chandra Roy was admitted under Rahaman at the private hospital after he was diagnosed with brain tumour in June this year. As advised by Dr Rahaman, the family deposited Rs 1,75000/- in advance for the operation which was conducted on July 3. However, the elderly man’s condition kept deteriorating and he died at the hospital on July 12.
Later, the complainant probed into the doctor and found out that Rahaman was a fake doctor and that his degrees were also forged and he lodged a complaint with Eco Park police station on Monday, August 17, following which the man was arrested.
Cops booked Rahaman under IPC sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 420 (cheating) and 468 (forgery). If proved guilty, Rahaman can face a maximum punishment of life imprisonment. He was produced before a district court that sent him to 10 days of police custody.
