Maharashtra resident doctors decide to continue their indefinite strike

Resident doctors in Maharashtra said on Monday they would continue their strike against the alleged rape-murder of a postgraduate trainee medic in Kolkata and to press for the implementation of the Central Healthcare Protection Act and their other demands. The strike has hit patient services, with only 18 major and 61 minor surgeries performed at five big civic-run hospitals in the city during the day. Dr Pratik Debaje, president of the Maharashtra State Association of Residential Doctors (Central-MARD), told PTI that a meeting of the representatives of the resident doctors' national body with the Union health secretary did not prove fruitful. Hence, they were firm on continuing their strike, he said.

37 held so far for hospital vandalism

Thirty-seven people have so far been arrested as the SIT continued its investigation into the vandalism at R G Kar Hospital on the intervening night of August 14-15.

Among the 37, five were arrested in the past 24 hours, while 23 were granted bail by a Sealdah court on Monday. Police also issued notices to 60-odd more people - witnesses and suspects - based on the call analysis from the area.

The notices are being sent on WhatsApp and SMS after confirming the persons' presence around R G Kar around the time of the vandalism. The 15-member SIT said at least 200 more names had been identified after questioning.
