KOLKATA: Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukhopadhyay's ‘Aamar Boss' stands among 10 nominees for the esteemed ICFT-UNESCO Gandhi medal to be bestowed at the 55th edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI).
This recognition is conferred in collaboration with the International Council for Film, Television and Audiovisual Communication (ICFT) Paris and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
This distinction honours films exemplifying Mahatma Gandhi's principles, specifically non-violence, tolerance, and social harmony, whilst fostering intercultural dialogue and peace. This year, two additional Indian films – Tushar Hiranandani's Hindi film ‘Srikanth' and Jadumoni Dutta's Assamese film ‘Juiphool' – vie alongside entries from Iran, Hungary, Sweden, Denmark, South Africa, Cambodia, and Laos.
‘Aamar Boss', marking Rakhee Gulzar's return to the big screen after two decades, chronicles a start-up establishing daycare centres for elderly parents of working professionals. Actor-director Shiboprosad Mukhopadhyay asserts his film possesses international competitive merit, addressing a universal issue whilst emphasising intergenerational communication. "In our childhood, our parents knew about our challenges. However, inadequate communication has evolved into a significant generational divide globally."
Professional commitments frequently alienate working individuals from their parents. "Unfortunately, they withhold their professional challenges from their parents. This communication void adversely affects parents, who endure increasing loneliness in their twilight years. Parental workplace visits would provide clarity about the pressures consuming their children's time and make them complain less about being ignored," Mukhopadhyay explained. Whilst cinematically intriguing, questions arise about whether such an option has practical workplace implementation. "Through this film, we have tried to show a path by which this chasm can be bridged. We're confident productivity would enhance following this approach," he affirmed.
