KOLKATA: The Kolkata metropolitan development authority (KMDA) shut entry to Rabindra sarobar for 24 hours from 3pm on Sunday till 3pm on Monday as measures to prevent any mishap at the lake premises due to cyclone 'Remal. All other lakes and parks like Subhas Sarobar, Benubana chhaya, Satyajit Ray Park and Paatuli floating market maintained by KMDA were also closed from Sunday 3pm onwards.

"It was decided to close all the lakes and parks maintained by KMDA from Sunday 3pm onwards till 3pm on Monday until further orders. All the clubs of Rabindra sarobar were intimated to close for the day. The overall situation will be reviewed after which the lake will reopen,” said a KMDA official on Sunday. The Kolkata municipal corporation also shut all its parks and gardens including Millennium park for the day.

With rains already had started from Sunday morning in different areas, KMDA, the custodian of the 192 acre Rabindra sarobar conducted miking from 12 noon onwards for visitors to leave the lake premises. All the entry gates of the lake were closed from 3pm onwards as a few notices were also put up.

Authorities said that there were apprehensions for trees to get uprooted as the situation will be assessed on Monday morning. Arrangements will be made in case any tree gets uprooted to remove them at the earliest, officials said.
